FigCraft vs Figma

Scope, files, sharing and handoff, compared by what each product publicly says it does. No winner is declared.

FigCraft is an open-source, clean-room interface design tool written in pure Rust, currently in early alpha, and it is not Figma. Figma is a separate product made by Figma, Inc. The choice depends on your files, your team and the sharing rules your work needs, so this page lists what to check instead of ranking the two.

Name note: FigCraft on this page means the ArtCraft interface design app. It is not Figma, not the .fig file format and not the fruit.

Who wrote this: the FigCraft Fan Guide editors, an independent fan-made group. This is not an official ArtCraft or FigCraft page.

FigCraft sources: the official page at getartcraft.com/apps/figcraft, the repository README at github.com/storytold/figcraft, and the v0.5.1 release page with its checksum file.

Figma sources: the public homepage at figma.com, read on 2026-10-16. Pricing pages were not used.

Method: each cell restates a category from one of those pages. This comparison did not install either product, open a Figma document in FigCraft or time any task.

What to verify

  1. Open one of your own Figma documents in FigCraft if you have one. The README says .fig support is best effort and was not checked against real Figma documents.
  2. List the features your work depends on, such as auto layout edge cases, component overrides, variable modes and prototype interactions. Then check each one against the current release notes.
  3. Decide the sharing route before you upload anything. Share ▸ Online stores the file on a server that is not end-to-end encrypted. The README suggests a server you run or a network you trust. Check whether your team's rules allow either.
  4. Read Figma's own legal and privacy pages for the data terms that apply to your account.

Who this comparison is for

Use this page if you are deciding which tool to test first for interface work and you already have a real file to try. Read the FigCraft entries next to the Figma entries, then check the primary sources on the day you decide. The sources are the authority on current releases, licences and terms.

Questions readers ask

Is FigCraft a replacement for Figma?

The README describes FigCraft as a clean-room reimplementation of Figma. It also gives its own estimate of about 49% of the way to replacing Figma for real work. That is the project's self-assessment, not a measurement, and it does not make FigCraft a drop-in replacement for any team.

Can FigCraft open my Figma files?

.fig files open on a best-effort basis. The README says the project has not been checked against real Figma documents, so test one of your own files before you rely on it.

Does this page say which tool is better?

No. It compares public product categories and names no winner. The right choice depends on your files, your team, your sharing rules and which features you need to be stable.

What this page does not claim
